HW - Tuesday, 5/31 - US Marshals Reading + Notes

For tonight, I want you to read several of the informational webpages straight from the US Marshal website, and take three notes from each page.  Just a note, you can go to the first link, and at the bottom of each page it links you to the next section.
http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/broad_range.htm
http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/general_practitioners.htm
http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/peril_of_your_life.htm
http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/civilian_enforcers.htm
http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/loyal_community.htm

Again, you should take three notes from each page.  Each of your notes should be in complete sentences, and be able to 'stand on their own' as facts.

Good Luck!!!

Warm Up - Tuesday, 5/31 - Hope you ejoyed your Memorial Day weekend! Hope you didn't DANCE...

To dance or not to dance?  I prefer to dance...but in fact, there were several people arrested at the Jefferson Memorial this weekend for doing just that...

Read this article to find out about it, I barely believed it myself.

Make sure you've read the whole article, some of the finer points are subtle.  Try to answer these questions about the article:
1) Why did the US Court of Appeals rule that dancing at a memorial is forbidden?
2) The author spins this as an example of civil disobedience, do you agree with that statement?
3) Were the police doing the right thing when they arrested these 5 people?  Defend your answer in two to three sentences.

Mini-Poster Guidelines

Tommy - Coast Guard, US Marshals
Sarah - NPS, FBI

Warm Up - Thursday, May 26 - To Walmart, or not to Walmart...that is the question.

I want you to read a recent blog post by a local news writer, on the site DCist.com.  This article is going to talk about Walmart wanting to move in to DC, and how the Mayor/D.C. Government is reacting to it.

Answer each of these questions, in complete sentences, each answer should be at least two sentences.

1) What is the ultimatum (meaning a 'one or the other' choice) that Grey is giving Walmart?
2) Why does the DC government care where Walmart decides to put it's stores?
3) Does the D.C. government have the right to be involved in where a company wants to open new stores?  Why or why not?
4) Would it make a difference in this situation if it was a smaller local company, with smaller stores instead of a very large company like Walmart?

Here is the story

If you want to read a little more detail, with some extra facts, check out the longer Washingtonpost article here.

Good Luck!

HW - Tuesday, 5/24 - None new.

Tonight we don't have any new homework, except to catch up on some if you are behind on some of your assignments(!)

Oh and keep reading Lord of the Flies at home too...

Warm Up - Tuesday, 5/24 - Play Devils Advocate

A good common definition of "Devil's Advocate" is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with, just for the sake of argument. (Wikipedia).

This morning, I want you to read this article, and identify the two sides of the argument by playing devils advocate, on both sides.  I want  you to write two separate paragraphs, each on opposite sides of this decision.  One paragraph should argue as to why the Supreme Court ruled correctly in this case (Brown v. Plata), and the other paragraph should argue as to why the Supreme Court Made a mistake.

You could consider starting each paragraph with "I believe that the Supreme Court was right in this case because..." and "I believe that the Supreme Court was wrong in this case because..."

The article can be read on the Washington Post here

Good luck.

Some people argue that the purpose of prisons is to punish people for their crimes.

This morning I want you to create your own crossword using the handout from yesterday.  You can use any key-word that shows up in that section, even if it is not a vocabulary word.  You can also use any words or terms we talked about yesterday in class

Remember: a good crossword clue is one that makes the player have to think hard to get the word from the clue, but should be clear enough that there shouldnt be many other words that fit.

http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/CrissCrossSetupForm.asp

In this puzzle-maker, you seperate your word from your clue with the first space, for example:
"dog this is the clue for my first entry"
Would use the word "dog" as the word, and "this is the clue for the first entry"

Your puzzle should have at least 15 entries, but could have more if you wish.  When you are done, trade crosswords and try to complete another classmates crossword.

Good luck!

So this morning I want to direct your attention over to the Oyez Project, which is a non-profit group dedicated to making information about the supreme court available to the public.  Today, your goal is to form "impressions" of two Supreme Court Justices, by listening to audio of them in action

http://www.oyez.org/cases
  • Select a case from the last 5 years, one that has the audio available on the left side
  • Read the description about that case, and the related information, so you can understand some of what they are talking about
  • Click the "Expanded View" of the audio clip on the left side.
  • You don't need to listen from the beginning, you can jump around and listen to different parts
    • (It's OK that some parts are hard to understand, listen for things like emotion or tone of voice)
The Assignment:
Pick two of the Justices you heard speak in your chosen case.  Write a paragraph for each, telling what your impressions of him/her are.  Just some to think about: Do they interrupt? Speak slowly or quickly?  Do they seem interested?  Are they nice about their questions? ... you get the idea.

If you end up finishing early, poke around try and find one or two other interesting things on the Oyez website.

Good Luck
